  1. THE DRIFTO DOME (8 May 17) Here is something i just picked up on the internet. It is called a "Icosahedron Geodesic 1V Dome" and i think it is the same design as what the "Starplate" lumber connector system produces. The owners of this dome did not use Starplates though. This video was produced by "Jola Josie" (cool name, huh?) from her travels around the country of New Zealand (jolajosie.com). If you want to view a special feature in the video - just pause the video.

►The Drifto Dome is a low budget, strong, weather proof and made using mostly recycled materials. Check the video out to find out more. Join me on a one-year adventure in a small gypsy house truck while i make weekly video blogs and a documentary about the nomadic lifestyle.◄
  2. 16ft Geodesic Dome Frame 16 FT GEODESIC DOME FRAME KIT   The sellers of this dome frame promote this for use as a greenhouse, but i think you could use it for other types of things like a camping shelter. 3. 18ft Wide Geodesic Dome Frame Kit 18 FT GEODESIC DOME FRAME KIT   This is a nice looking prefabricated unit. It has multiple use possibilities: Build it as a small permanent dwelling, guest house, greenhouse, meditation place, remote cabin, storage building, emergency shelter, animal shelter, or whatever your imagination comes up with. The metal dome frame itself provides all the strength necessary. Other than the 2X6s in the door frame it does not rely on finishing materials for strength, allowing for great design flexibility and finishing options. Patent pending design uses high-strength custom-made struts, not to be confused with dome kits made of low-strength electrical conduit. Transports easily. Entire frame fits on one pallet. Precision sheet metal templates for tracing the triangles and screw holes are provided. Sheet metal templates are provided which are used to trace onto plywood or other covering material. This is a cool looking low cost set-up i think.
►Our unique, patent pending design should not to be confused with similarly sized dome kits that are made from low strength electrical conduit. Our uniquely designed struts are very strong and create a structure that can be covered with vinyl, greenhouse plastic, or finished out with dimensional lumber and readily available materials to create a beautiful, permanent structure. The Geodome Shelter Systems design allows for flexibility of materials to use to complete. When being finished as a permanent structure wall thickness can be from 2X2, 2X4, 2X6 or 2X8 depending on the amount of insulation desired. Our do it yourself kits make dome building a snap! Our precisely made struts bolt together perfectly. You can then finish it to the level of your choosing from a simple shelter to a highly refined example of materials and workmanship, as fits your taste and budget.◄

  8. Super Dome Climber GEODESIC DOME CLIMBERS   Dome Climbers are really made very strong for use as children's climbing apparatus for backyard or playground use. I am including these domes here because i think there is a good possibility they could be used for shelters if covered with some kind of canvas fabric or plastic tarp. Pictured on the right is a larger style dome climber called "Super Dome Climber" which i think is about 17ft wide by 7ft height and It's made from tough 1-1/16in outside diameter galvanized steel pipe. Use area: 31ft. Shipping weight: 400lbs. But be careful with buying these domes because the dimensions are not given lots of times or the dimensions are not very clear.
  9. 2v Dome GEODESIC DOME VIDEOS (1 Jul 17) This listing here is special in that it only contains links to Youtube videos which feature information/instructional material on building and finishing a geodesic dome frame whether using electrical metal tubing or some other material such as PVC pipe or 2x4 lumber. These videos can be very helpful for the first time builder of a dome frame.

  10. Anthony Sokolowski Steel Geodesic Dome Frame GEODESIC HELP GROUP   Here is a link to a google group: Geodesic Frame site that has lots of good information for those of you wanting to build your own geodesic dome frame. People discuss the mathematics associated with geometric shapes. They also discuss dome books. There is tons of information on this site along with a lot of pictures displaying geodesic hubs and completed dome frame set-ups. I do not think there is very much spam on the site. A person could spend many long hours on this site.
  11. Membrane Dome FREEDOMES   Even though this company seems to build larger membrane covered domes, they also have a small version suitable for individual use. This business is similar to Pacific Domes in Ashland, Oregon.

►Freedomes is an international company specializing in providing event domes for all kinds of projects as well as permanent structures based on the geodesic dome idea. We are one of the few companies in our line of business that manufactures every single one of the dome structures in our offer and most surely the only one able to deliver such a wide range of products and additional features. 12. Dome Cover STARPOD VILLAGE   UPDATE: (27 Jul 16) The original website is not available at this time. Maybe they will put it back up in the future. This listing here is a good example of people making a simple online business selling prefab small dome accessory packages to the general public. What they are selling is only the dome cover and a plastic "tarp like" floor system, you have to purchase a "Stromberg's Starplate Building System" to complete this dome structure. I think this is really cool. After you finish building the starplate frame, then you can purchase this kit to cover the frame & install a plastic tarp like floor. Great set-up for camping.

►The Starpod is an icosahedron 1V dome structure designed to provide spacious and sturdy shelter to a multitude of outdoor scenerios. They've been utilized in as wide a range of purposes as Vendor booth, DJ/sound pod, Burning Man dwelling, food storage, and others. The Starpod uses the StarPlate joint system for the frame construction. These plates provide a durable and sturdy frame made with 1in x 2in wood struts which are available from any building supply center. To make the Starpod especially resistant to the hot sun the skin is made out of SilviCool tarp fabric. Any tree planters among us will recognize SilviCool as what the tarps for the trees and bags are made out of. This durable fabric is white on the outside with a shiny silver on the inside. The principle is that the white reflects the heat of the sun and the silver helps insulate the cooler shade below. It seems to work better than anything . . . The fabric lets a comfortable amount of light through. and it's great sleeping in a shiny silver pod that you can stand up in.◄
  13. The Zip Tie Domes Manufacturing Crew ZIP TIE DOMES   This is probably a relatively new Geodesic Dome Frame business. They are based in the state of Tennessee. Anyway, they have developed a new method of dome frame building which incorporates a simple hub system as the connection point for PVC tubing. Their dome system is suitable for something like Burningman, an animal enclosure such as a piggy or chicken coop, and/or a greenhouse structure. You will probably enjoy visiting their website because there is a lot of instructional videos and good pictures of construction techniques and other useful information. You might also be able to use EMT metal struts with these hubs they provide, but check with them first, they do have some info on their website about this subject.

►No tools are required for assembling our Geodesic Dome Frames. Just use the 120 lb heavy duty zip ties to connect the struts to the hubs. The instructions are easy, and the struts are pre-cut and guaranteed to fit perfectly. This is better than building a wooden frame, where you need a drill, a power screwdriver, a skill saw to cut your struts, and a table saw to split your 2x4s into 2x2s. You also need the carpentry skills to use these tools, and all 10 of your fingers! Our philosophy is that this is more than just a business. Zip Tie Domes is what that we do to improve the lives of other people. Food and Shelter can be provided by our domes, and we strive to make the best product at the lowest price. If you have a need for these domes, and funds are an issue, please contact us and we will provide them at reduced cost. Our Guarantee:
    (1) If you are not completely satisfied, you may return the product for any reason for a full refund up to 90 days from the date of purchase.
    (2) We guarantee to replace any defective part for two (2) years from the date of purchase.◄
  14. 24ft Green Brother Dome MANDALA DOMES   I just received this new listing based in the state of Idaho. These folks are a "Full Service" dome business and have a very nice website. Picture on the right is of their "24 foot Green Brother Dome. They offer the following: RENTAL SERVICES - They specialize in providing geodesic structures for your special events. They work with festivals, weddings, parties, and conferences to create environments that are both practical and aesthetically inspiring.

  15. Sample of Product BASBOGA   This is a business based in the country of Turkey. On the upper right hand corner of their website is a link to their english language website. They make very large structures using framed fabric. I mean really large. But they also have some smaller units suitable for consumer/individual use. The covering they use appears to be some kind of plastic material which they refer to as a: "transparent or translucent membrane".

►The frames of our domes are a structure composed of a network of pentagon shaped truss members. Steel frame is covered by a membrane and sits on a circular area. We build dome structures whose diameters run from 5 meters all the way up to 30 meters. The special connection mechanism allows for easy and rapid construction and deconstruction of the dome. The design of our domes requires no vertically running columns within the structure. The absence of any internal support provides an uninterrupted clear space. These domes can be connected between doors by use of tunnels. These tunnels provide easy access from one dome to another and give the whole structure an aesthetic look. The light weight of the domes allows easy transportation from one point to another by use of a crane. In addition to their rather elegant appearances, these domes cost less and can be deployed with minimum manpower in comparison to other steel construction solutions. Once deconstructed, they can be easily put away and stored as they require a minimum area of storage space. The transparent or translucent membrane that covers the frame can be manufactured with openings if desired. Translucent membranes can provide a reasonably good level of natural daylight while blocking most of the hazardous UV light, and help you cut down on energy costs. The exterior of the membrane can be used for advertisements, logos and other branding purposes by use of digital prints on the surface. The functionality and elegance of these structures make them ideal solutions for sports activities, fairs, stands, and all kinds of promotional activities. Some of the accessories and options we offer our customers that are unique to dome structures: Openings on the side or top providing panoramic sight, fully-equipped glass doors, heating, ventilation and air conditioning. Tunnels (walkways) for connectivity between the doors. With our two-year warranty and after sales support, we offer the most affordable temporary or permanent structures in the market for your business needs.◄
  16. Sample of Product TWILIGHT PROJECT NEW DOME COVER   This listing here takes you to a subject that some dome frame owners will need to address occasionally, and that is the need to replace the fabric cover on your dome. Here is a very educational article taken from "Brizel's Handcrafts" blog.

►This week, I'm going to share the beginnings of a new project . . . The one in which we replace the canvas cover to the geodesic dome. The old cover was canvas nylon which we painted with a green elastomeric paint. The expected life for this cover was approximately 7 yrs . . . Which proved to be correct since the large vinyl bay window did breach after that amount of time due to a hail storm. By then, the zippers on the roll up windows had ceased to function. But . . . With some creative solutions - we made it good through
this last winter . . . Some 11 years after its original install. On Friday July 20th, as it so happened: New moon, we began to tear down the old cover to the dome early morning. After getting that done, Bruce & I began to clean the 3/4in galvanized metal piping which makes up the structure of this five tiered building. In the photo below, you can see Bruce standing on the second level and we still have the 4th & crown level to the old cover still on the building. I cleaned the struts first with plain water and then Bruce followed with a bleach solution so as to insure the removal of any mold particles. Around 1pm, Elias from Pacific Domes arrived from Ashland to help us complete our task of getting ready for the new dome cover which he was delivering in view of installing it for us. Elias was born in a geodesic dome in 1979 and has been involved with their installations from the time of his youth to current adulthood. The rest of the old cover is now off and its amazing how a structure which is 30in in diameter and riding about 18ft high from floor to apex can look so small. Elias climbs domes like walking up steps in a house but he had to admit that having this 30in dome off the ground by another 3ft messed with his usual point of reference.◄
  17. The Money Dome THE MONEY DOME   There is a fair amount of information on this website about building an EMT (Electrical Metal Tubing) geodesic framework, and the website is not about building domes, it is about "Overcoming the "Insanity of Humanity" by Choosing Ways to Survive Together as Individuals Without the Use of Force". But anyway, there are some nice pictures of the manufacturing steps required for making the dome struts.

We recognize that Freedom was taken from us the moment the ink was drying on the Constitution. Today's governmental structure is imploding under its own weight, and its death rattles aren't going to be pretty. At Freedom's Phoenix we observe, comment and try to stay out of the way. We know Freedom will rise from the ashes, and we want to make sure that everyone's Freedom is never signed away again by those who believe they have the power to do so. Over a period of years, Ernest Hancock envisioned having a news and current information website where anyone could quickly and easily post news articles, opinions, and links to stories on other sites about any subject they wished to bring to people's attention. He wanted a site where visitors could find the real truth about what's going on in the world and quickly get the information they needed to keep informed, rather than be subjected to the filters of a slavering collective mainstream media awaiting the approval of their government masters. FreedomsPhoenix.com was developed to satisfy those needs and has rapidly grown to include the work of writers and editors on many timely topics.◄
  18. Geo-Dome Picture GEO-DOME   This listing here has a lot of useful items on it. One useful item is their "Dome Calculation Tools". Lots of fresh material and pictures available. I hope they can keep this site up because it is so good.

►Welcome to Geo-dome: Invented by R.Buckminster fuller in the late 1940s geodesic domes are one of the most efficient structures known to man, often thought of as complex or expensive to build, here at Geo-dome we can show you just how simple, cost effective and efficient geodesic dome structures can be. With an expanding range of high quality great value geodesic dome kits your sure to find something that fits you're needs. The baby of the range is the GD5, with a floor area of about 5 square meters this dome will fit in pretty much any garden, it can even be halved and used as a lean to greenhouse. Our mid range dome is the GD18 with a very useful floor area of around 18 square meters this dome makes a lovely spacious greenhouse or garden room. The GD27 is the largest standard kit we make, with a floor area of 27 square meters and a diameter of 6m this dome has plenty of space and you shouldn't need planning permission. Kits are available in basic, part assembled or fully installed, we can also build kits to your requirements, Contact Paul for more info . . .◄
  19. Geodesic Dome Construction Instructions GEO DOME CONSTRUCTION INSTRUCTIONS   This listing here is rather small in content, but has some good information to add to your geodesic dome construction technique inventory.

►These instructions are for an order-three icosahedral base geodesic dome. The dome is approx. 24 feet in diameter (142 inch radius). Constructed dome, courtesy of Greg S. It requires 120 struts which can be cut from 60 10ft pipes. Three different length pieces are used (A, B and C). Use 1/2 inch EMT (electrical metal tubing) pipe that comes in 10 foot segments. This is a galvanized steel conduit pipe that costs approx $1.50 per 10ft length. You can buy these from Home Despot or other warehouse style hardware stores. They come in bundles of 10. Get 60 pipes plus a few extra. You will also need 46 bolts, 46 nuts and 92 washers. The bolt width is not critical. 1/4 inch diameter steel bolts will certainly be strong enough. Each segment of pipe is cut into two pieces (of possibly unequal length), thus: There should be a little tube left over at the end of each pipe. The final length of each piece should be as accurate as possible (preferably to within 1/16"). Accurate pipe construction will make the dome assembly easier. Once the pipes are cut, the ends of each pipe need to be flattened by hammering or compression. The ideal tool for this task is a shop press, but unfortunately these are not so easy to come by. Hammering with a heavy sledge hammer can be a good option if you have plenty of aggression to get out and a space where you can make lots of noise. Otherwise you can improvise a press using a very heavy vise and a piece of heavy pipe as a handle. Don't try to use the EMT pipe as a vise handle, because it is not strong enough and will bend. Flatten between an inch and 1.5 inches of pipe at each end. The pipe may crack along it's seams at the place where you flatten it. Not to worry though, this won't significantly affect the construction. Try to make the flattened parts of the two ends of each pipe as parallel as possible. This is quite important, and trickier than it sounds. Also try to get them pretty flat since we need to bolt up to 6 pipes together at each vertex . . .◄

  21. 17ft Wide Geodesic Dome Frame Kit EDGE DOMES  (19 Feb 17) This is Based out of Chattanooga, Tennessee! It looks like it is made using either 1/2in or 3/4in Electrical Metal Tubing (EMT). Picture on the right is showing the inside of a completed dome frame with hammocks strung about hanging from the frame members. This is offered by a company called: Edge Domes. They call this model their "Camping Dome". They seem to be big on the use of hammocks with their dome frames, but a person can throw a tarp or other fabric covering over the frame to form a nice shelter.

►EdgeDomes began in June 2013. At the previous Bonnaroo, I had slept in a tent. When the sun came up in the mornings, it got HOT! I needed a way to sleep in. So I made a couple of these cool little tripod hammock stands, and tarped over them. Worked like a charm! I was able to stay cool in a hammock, airflow going, I can feel the breeze under me, no baking in a greenhouse of a tent. So, I'm walking around on Friday, happy with my little setup, and I see someone with one of these dome things, and a few hammocks in it. I thought, "This is how I wanna camp at a festival!" So I got home from Bonnaroo and started doing research. A week and a half later, my first dome was complete, and me and my crew were on our way to Rothbury Michigan for our first Electric Forest Festival! 10 of us traveled there in 3 cars for 15 hours. As we began setting it up, we starting getting some weird looks from some of our neighbors. "What is that thing?" "Watch and find out." The dome became our home for the weekend. It drew people like moths to a flame. Everybody wanted to know about it, find out more, or just come hang out in it. "Where did you get this?" "I made it." "Where can I get one?" "...you can make one yourself?" Not really much of an answer for most people. So I started carrying this dome around festival-to-festival. All the time people were asking questions. A few people paid me to make them a dome. That's when I decided I wanted to let anybody be able to camp in a dome with their hammock at a Festival, and EdgeDomes was born!◄
  22. Domerama GD15 Dome Kit DOMERAMA   Here is a very well done website with lots of valuable information about domes and dome building. Most of the material included on this listing pertains to flexible coverings, but there is one straw bale covered dome page which you should visit. Lots of great pictures here and actually it is a work in progress, but there is enough good information to include it here. Picture on the right is of their GD15 Dome Kit.

►Domerama exists to help understand and build geodesic domes and other types of dome-shaped structures. For the DIY people out there: Building your own geodesic dome is an ideal DIY project that anyone at any age and skill level can contribute to. You can start with a simple geodesic dome with materials found at your local hardware store.
If you have basic equipment and tools, you can make it at home. We have several geodesic dome calculators and information on many types of similar structures. For the non-DIY crowd: On the other hand, purchasing a dome kit may be just right for you; the more complex and bigger you want your dome, the more attentive to details you need to be. Domerama helps you understand what to look for so you can make an informed decision. Whatever is right for you, Domerama is here to give you knowledge so as to take informed decisions. This is why the geodesic dome structures on this site give more than just strut lengths; we also give you estimates on how big your dome cover will be, cost of materials and even seating capacity! What got us all excited about domes and other similar structure? Well the beauty, elegance and genius on using less to make more. Here below is a small video clip about a lecture given by R. Buckminster Fuller, the one credited with the geodesic dome design. Don't worry, it's actually fun and educational at the same time. We hope you like what you see. Please contact us for anything. We're a new site so improvements are made constantly and your input is greatly appreciated.◄
  23. Pacific Domes Livable DomesPACIFIC DOMES   Located in the state of Oregon in the town of Ashland. They sell Portable Fabric Covered geodesic domes. Very beautiful. Lots of beautiful pictures here with lots of good ideas. Pacific Domes has been in business for a long time and established themselves as the leader in the steel frame/soft cover dome. Their beautiful works of art (dome set-ups) can be seen all over the world. Picture on the right is of their portable "Approximately 30ft Shelter Dome".

►Domes are nature's perfect structure and provide a unique environment for every use. Pacific Domes has perfected the function and beauty of our portable Geodesic Domes since 1980 in Ashland, Oregon. We combine the sacred geometry of R. Buckminster Fuller with our progressively designed covers to bring you this futuristic, Zen structure. The vision of Pacific Domes is to populate the world with domes. Our goal is to help solve the shelter needs of humanity as well as to create global harmonic resonance. The synergetic geometry generates cosmic order wherever the dome is erected, creating peace and well being. The geodesic dome will play an important role in the future evolution of "Spaceship Earth".◄
  24. Icosa Project Starplate FrameICOSA PROJECT   This link brings you to a page on countryplans.com which contains some good pictures of 2X4 framework using the starplate connectors mentioned somewhere else on this website.
Actually, the builder of this frame is using it as an addition to a more conventional shed like structure. This page does not show the completed project, but gives you the viewer a good idea of how the starplate system looks when set-up with 2X4 lumber struts.

►I have really enjoyed this site and thought i would share what i am tinkering on . . . I am building a small cabin in 2 parts . . . The first part is the icosa dome room and then will be attached to a more typical structure. The icosa is being built beside my house and then i will move it to the site . . . The second part of the cabin is still being designed. OK, some photos of the basic frame . . . I am using starplate connectors with preset angles . . . The final location for the project will be along the North Saskatchewan River in Northern Canada . . .◄
  25. Mini-YurtLODGE TECH   I like this website and business. They do not sell the metal hubs used in building their frame systems separately, but build their frame and covering systems as a unit and you must buy a complete prefab unit for you're own use or you can buy their "Frame Only Kit". These shelters are especially suitable for off-grid type living.

►We have over 20 years of design and manufacturing experience, and 14 years in building Geodesic structures in various locales, starting with friends and family then expanding to the general public, with the love of the great outdoors foremost in our minds and hearts. The owner had vast experience camping in a Tipi (long ago) and discovered that a Tipi is very obsolete, the smoke, the dripping water, the mosquitoes and pests. Even after adding a wood stove it was still very inadequate. So after many years rolled by we set out to find a better solution. We bypassed the traditional lattice type yurts when we found the Geodesic types which are vastly stronger
and have a certain geometry and symmetry which are light years beyond the two other structures. The new Geo Yurt solves all the problems of the former ones and offers customers a pleasant wilderness experience! And these same designs lend themselves to Greenhouses and the whole self sufficient lifestyle. All of our Yurts and Domes are built with 2x4 oiled fir struts, and heavy duty 18oz vinyl (rated at 15+ yrs), and 1/4 thick galvanized steel hubs. They can all withstand 18in snow load and 60+ MPH wind, the 12ft diameter Yurts and Greenhouses have a steep roof angle so most of the snow slides off on its own, or with a little push from inside-down it comes. They can be put right on the ground, wooden or military type fast decking, with various anchors available as options. All kits come with complete easy to follow color coded instructions and drawings. Vinyl, or Greenhouse panels go on one at a time and are over lapped like shingles, so the whole structure is leak proof. Outer seam should be painted with Rustoleum Paint (not included) to protect and seal staple line, (except portable 12ft). These type Yurts are vastly stronger than the lattice type, and the Geodesic Domes are the strongest building on earth, and also the most energy wise, used in the Arctic circle.◄
  26. Bow ShedTHE BOW ROOF SHED   This is really a website used to record the progress made by this couple who purchased a sailing boat for restoration. I am directing your attention to the "The Bow Roof Shed" tab or link. There is a lot of information on building this unique frame which can be used for most any purpose. It is suitable for coverage by different types of synthetic material in my opinion. It offers a low cost alternative for a temporary shelter which could be used perhaps at Burning Man or anywhere. Click on these other two links here and here to visit some other sites featuring information on building a bow roof shed.

►Welcome to our website where we are documenting the modifications and restoration of Far Reach, our 1982 Cape Dory 36 Hull #61. Our desire is to restore and make modifications to our nearly 30 year old boat so that she will better meet the requirements of our future sailing plans. The real meat of the restoration began in early 2009. We believe it will take 18-24 months to complete. It is a learn as we go project. If you have questions or comments we would love to hear from you.◄
